What is a domain name?
Registering a domain name is typically the first step in creating an online presence for any business.
A domain name is part of the website address used by humans to find information on the internet (in place of the IP address used by computers – a string of numbers).
The domain name is combined with a top-level domain (aka domain extension) such as “.com” or “.com.au” to form the root domain, which must be unique – meaning you can’t register it if someone else already has active registration. For example:
- google.com
- facebook.com
- kook.com.au
The full website URL will also include a protocol (such as http:// or ideally https://) and often a subdomain such as “www.” at the start.
