What is a Content Management System (CMS)?

Are you unclear on what web designers and digital marketers mean when they refer to a Content Management System or CMS?

A CMS is essentially a software application that enables a user to be able to create, publish, manage and modify content on their website without having to know how to write HTML, CSS or Javascript code.

There are many different CMS options, some with an admin interface that is more user-friendly than others. In many, updating content is as easy as using Microsoft Word.

Examples of CMS include:

  • WMS (Kook’s own proprietary Microsoft.Net CMS)
  • WordPress
  • Squarespace
  • Shopify
  • Wix
  • Weebly
  • Magento
  • PrestaShop
  • Joomla
  • Drupal

Big advantages of a traditional CMS such as WordPress, one of the best known, is that you’re able to choose your website hosting provider and custom development options abound.

Software as a Service (SaaS) options such as Squarespace, Shopify, Wix and Weebly are hosted CMS solutions – also known as website builders – with more limitations. With these options, your site is automatically hosted on the platform’s own servers and cannot be transferred elsewhere, with the hosting fee essentially rolled into your monthly or annual plan.
