Often Search Engine Optimization companies will email large numbers of default website emails, usually directly from a mailing list system without even visiting a website, claiming to have performed a free check up or offering a free SEO report on your website. According to the Google Webmaster Guidelines regarding Search Engine Optimization (SEO) you should be particularly wary of firms who approach potential customers using these methods, to quote Google;
” Be wary of SEO firms and web consultants or agencies that send you email out of the blue.
Amazingly, we get these spam emails too:
“Dear google.com,
I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of the major search engines and directories…”
Reserve the same skepticism for unsolicited email about search engines as you do for “burn fat at night” diet pills or requests to help transfer funds from deposed dictators.”
Often there are too many variables to gain any real insight from these reports. They are more like broad marketing aimed at customers unfamiliar with web traffic data.
For example, check if the report mentions results or their methods. Do these figures include paid traffic? Do they include local traffic? How much customer data do they have? What are the search terms? Are they locally themed?
A quality Search Engine Optimisation strategy can be very beneficial to your rankings and help keep you towards the top of the ranking for your desired search terms or prevent other companies from overtaking through their SEO. On the flipside a Black Hat SEO company can cause long lasting damage to your site, sometimes this damage is quite expensive to repair over a long period of time.
The best thing to do if you receive one of these reports is to treat it with a very liberal grain of salt, read through the email to recognise what sections of the email could have been automatically generated. We have had companies approach us concerned that a list of what appears to be competing sites are now outranking them only to find these sites were not actually outranking them, were geographically ranking higher in the market where the SEO company was located not in their local area or not in the same business as the site in question.
